One of the most gallant stands of courage and undying self-sacrifices which have come down through the pages of history is the defense of the Alamo. On February 23, 1836, Colonel William Barret Travis, with his force, refused to surrender but elected to fight and die, which was almost certain, for what they thought was right, more importantly, independence from Mexico.

The Mexican force was numbered to thousands and was led by General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna. The Alamo had about 200 defenders – led by James Bowie and William Travis. The battle lasted for 13 days, before ending when the Texans were fatally overpowered by the Mexican invaders.
