The American flag is a powerful symbol of democracy and freedom to millions of people around the world. Originally created by Betsy Ross in June of 1776 when a small committee of gentlemen consisting of George Washington, Robert Morris, and relative George Ross came to Betsy and discussed the need of a new American Flag to unify the 13 colonies. She combined her talents as a seamstress to sew 13 stars and stripes into a red, white and blue masterpiece treasured for ages as one of the most beautiful pieces of American history ever created.
On June 14, 1777, the Continental Congress passed an act establishing Old Glory as the official flag for the new nation. The resolution stated: “Resolved, that the flag of the United States be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation.” On August 3, 1949, President Harry S. Truman officially declared June 14 as Flag Day.
