A suicide mission by terrorists from al-Qaeda, an Islamic extremist group from Saudi Arabia and other Arab nations, crashed four hijacked planes into targets within the United States. Two of the four planes crashed into the North and South towers of the World Trade Centers; another plane into the Pentagon in Arlington, VA. However, a fourth hijacked United Flight 93 plane did not make its intended target but came to symbolize bravery in the face of the hideous attack over American skies.
While the plane was delayed, passengers heard of the news on the attacks in New York and Washington and as a result, some passengers and attendants attacked and disarmed the hijackers. Soon after the plane turned over, crashing into a field in the small town of Shanksville in Western Pennsylvania.
