Availability: In stock

The Black Ribbon Remembrance pin is an honorable way to remember the valor of those who proudly fought for their country, but didn’t make it home. This pin also serves as a beautiful way to give thanks to the Police, Fire and Law Enforcement Officials that lost their lives on the job. Handcrafted in America, the brass with gold plating and the rich and dark enamel reflects on the traditional custom of wearing black when in mourning.

In 1971, while the Vietnam War was still going on, Mary Helen Hoff, the wife of a service member missing in action and a member of the "National League of Families of American Prisoners and Missing in Southeast Asia" recognized the need for a symbol of U.S. POW/MIA's, some of whom had been held captivity for as many as seven years.

Her husband, Navy pilot Lt. Cmdr. Michael Hoff, had been missing in action since January 7, 1970. Mary called the country's oldest and largest flag-maker, Annin Flag makers of Verona, N.J. to collaborate on a way to commemorate the memory of those who were still in the hearts and minds of so many, yet so far from home. Graphic artist Newton F. Heisley, a WWII Veteran himself was given the task to design the flag, which took inspiration from his own patriot and modeled the flag's silhouette after his 24-year-old son, who was on leave from the Marines and looking gaunt while getting over hepatitis. Heisley also penned the words that are stitched on the banner, "You are not forgotten."
