A response to the terrorists’ attacks on the United States by al-Qaeda on September 11, 2001 was needed. Osama Bin Laden was determined to be the terrorist leader. He then became the target. It was assumed that he and many other terrorists were hiding in Afghanistan. Therefore, the air battle commenced in Afghanistan: Operation Enduring Freedom. The intention was to remove al-Qaeda and the Taliban from power. Additional Islamic top leaders were found and were either prosecuted or killed.
