On the morning of December 26th, with the excitement and enthusiasm of General George Washington’s crossing of the Delaware from the previous night still rising; Washington led the main body of the Continental Army against the Hessian soldiers who were barricaded in Trenton, NJ. After a brief battle, nearly the entire Hessian force was captured, with few losses to the American soldiers. The battle notably boosted the American Continental Army's declining morale, and motivated re-enlistments.

The Trenton Battle Monument, a tribute to this American victory stands at "Five Points" in Trenton, NJ as both a commitment and honor to the brave men and women who fought to keep America as "the land of the free and home of the brave," because "to be prepared for war is one of the most effective means of preserving peace."
